In Armenia`s interbank foreign exchange market from August 4-8,  2025, ruble transactions increased significantly while dollar transactions decreased

ArmInfo. In Armenia's interbank foreign exchange  market from August 4 to August 8, 2025, there was a noticeable decrease in ruble transactions amidst a decline in dollar transactions. Euro transactions have not taken place for two and a half months. Particularly, the weekly trend of dollar transactions shifted from a 47% growth to a 21% decline, while ruble transactions, which resumed the previous week, jumped by 86%. This reduced the prevalence of  total weekly  dollar transactions over ruble transactions from 2.5 times to 1.1 times. In parallel with this, in the intra-bank foreign exchange market during the same period (04-08.08.25 compared to 28.07-01.08.25) the growth in purchasing dollars slowed down significantly, while the trend for selling  dollars  increased. The  trend for purchasing-selling euros continued to rise, and in ruble transactions the purchase growth was accompanied by the sales trend going down. As a result, from August 4 to August 8, the dram remained stable against the dollar at  AMD 383.5 /$1, weakened against the euro - AMD 440 to AMD 447/1 EUR, and also weakened against the ruble - AMAD 4.75 to AMD 4.78/1RUB.

On August 8, 2024, the dram exchange rate to the dollar was AMD 388.5/$1, to the euro - AMD 422.5 /1 EUR, and to the ruble - AMD 4.45/1RUB. Compared to the current rates, this indicates an annual revaluation of the dram to the dollar, and a devaluation to the euro and ruble. According to the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, dollar transactions and the same number of ruble transactions were conducted in the interbank foreign exchange market from August 4 to 8 of this year, with both dollar and ruble transactions conducted simultaneously on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (August 4, 6 and 7), and either only ruble or only dollar transactions on Tuesday and Friday (August 5 and 8). As a result, the total weekly volume of dollar transactions amounted to $8.7 million at an average rate of AMD 384 /$1 (compared to AMD 384.02r/$1 a week earlier). Ruble transactions were carried out for a total of 650 million rubles at an average rate of AMD 4.79/1RUB (compared to 4.75 /1RUB a week earlier). The maximum volume of dollar transactions "appeared" on Friday (August 8) - $3 million, and the largest volume of ruble transactions occurred on Monday (August 4) - 200 million rubles.

In the interbank foreign exchange market from August 4 to 8 of this year, compared to the previous week (28.07-01.08.25), the growth of dollar purchases slowed from 19% to 0.7%, while the sales trend shifted from a 22% decline to a 33% increase. The euro purchase-sale trend remained on the rise with the purchase rate accelerating from 1% to 97.2% and the sale rate slowing from 37.2% to 27.3%. For ruble transactions, the purchase trend moved from a 7.3% decline to a 48.1% increase, accompanied by a reversal of the sales trend from a 12.7% growth to a 44.6% decline. As a result, during the reporting week, $162.1 million was purchased at an average rate of AMD 382.36r/$1, 61.4 million euros at an average rate of AMD 439.98 /1EUR, and 21.3 billion rubles at an average rate of AMD 4.78r/1RUB. Additionally, $290.1 million was sold at an average rate of AMD 384.87r/$1, 80.6 million euros at an average rate of AMD 447.41 /1EUR, and 2.2 billion rubles at an average rate of AMD 4.87 /1RUB. The largest volumes of dollar purchases and sales occurred on Friday (August 8 - $48.2 million and $81.5 million), the maximum volumes of euro sales and ruble purchases were recorded on Monday (August 4 - 22.1 million euros and 5.4 billion rubles), and the largest volumes of ruble sales and euro purchases occurred on Tuesday (August 5 - 491.6 million rubles and 18.1 million euros). According to the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, in January-May 2025, the Central Bank intervened in the foreign exchange market in February-May for a total of $519.4 million with the exchange rate strengthening from February's AMD 394.19 to May's AMD 385.90/$1. These were solely purchase operations.

In the interbank foreign exchange market in January-May 2025, $2.6 billion, 829.4 million euros and 313 billion rubles were purchased, and $4.1 billion, 1.5 billion euros and 82.1 billion rubles were sold. This formed the purchase rate in the interbank foreign exchange market in May at AMD  384.87/$1, AMD 430.58/1 EUR and AMD 4.76/1RUB, and the sale rate at AMD 388.21/$1, AMD 439.69/1EUR and AMD 4.83 /1RUB compared to AMD 394.84/$1, AMD 413.75 /1 EUR, AMD 3.84/1RUB - for buying, and AMD 398.16 /$1, AMD 420.09 /1 EUR,  AMD3.97/1RUB for selling in December 2024. In the foreign currency exchange interbank market in January-May 2025, dollar transactions were made in the amount of $275 million and ruble transactions - in the amount of 17.2 billion rubles, and euro transactions were made only in February-March and May for a total of 1.9 million euros. This was accompanied  by a weakening of the dram against the ruble and euro to AMD 4.80 / 1RUB and AMD 436.40 / 1 EUR in May, and a strengthening against the dollar to AMD 386.08 / $ 1 in December 2024, respectively AMD 3.84/ 1RUB, AMD 414.25 / 1 EUR and AMD 396.1  / $ 1.

The largest volume of dollar transactions was made in January ($ 81 million), ruble transactions - in May (7.7 billion rubles), and euro transactions - in February (1 million euros). The currency exchange platform, after eight years of "silence", resumed its operations in June 2024 and in five months (June-October) dollar transactions were carried out for a total of $14.7 million, accompanied by the strengthening of the dram from AMD 388.90 in June to AMD 387.75 drams/$1 in October. In November-December, the currency exchange platform was empty. Then in 2025, from January to May, dollar transactions were carried out on the currency exchange platform for $3.8 million, accompanied by the strengthening of the dram from AMD 398.75 in January to AMD 388.28 /$1 in May.

Recall  that ruble transactions in the interbank foreign exchange market of Armenia started on March 14, 2022. From that moment until the end of the year, transactions worth 8.7 billion rubles were carried out, with additional 17.5 billion rubles expected for the whole of 2023. This was accompanied by a weakening of the dram against the ruble in the interbank foreign exchange market in March-December 2022 from AMD 4.86 to AMD 5.8 /1 RUB. However, there was a subsequent strengthening of the dram against the ruble to AMD 4.47/1 RUB by the end of 2023, and further improving to AMD 3.84 /1 RUB by the end of 2024.
