ArmInfo. Armenia's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the severing of economic ties with Russia will result in the Armenian market becoming dependent on Azerbaijani and Turkish markets. Political scientist and commentator Benjamin Matevosyan shared this insight on his Telegram channel.
Regarding the statements by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about lifting restrictions on cargo transit to Armenia and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's announcement about reducing military service from 24 to 18 months, Matevosyan expressed his conviction that this synchronization of actions by the two leaderships is aimed at influencing the Armenian electorate ahead of the 2026 elections. In this regard, he also pointed out the statement made by Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan, who announced today that grain from Kazakhstan will soon be transported to Armenia via Azerbaijani and Georgian railways. "This also fits into the policy of 'replacing' Russian grain," the political observer noted.
According to Matevosyan, the country's dependence on transit through Azerbaijan will also become significant, and deliveries of wheat or gas will potentially become levers of political influence on Armenia. Matevosyan cited the blockade of the Lachin corridor as an example.
