ArmInfo. Armenian authorities need to foster positive public sentiment toward Azerbaijan, which strives for "peace" and, therefore, supplies gasoline to Armenia at a lower price than Russia. Vahe Davtyan, a political scientist and energy security expert, wrote this on his Facebook page.
"Did you know that Armenia has been importing petroleum products from Turkey via Georgia for many years? In 2018-2020, the volume of petroleum product imports from Turkey increased significantly, reaching $24.3 million in 2019. Imports continued in 2024. 2.7% of the 489.1 thousand tons of imported petroleum products came from Turkey, that is, 13.2 thousand tons of gasoline, which in monetary terms amounts to $12.6 million. This is not even comparable to the symbolic volumes imported from Azerbaijan," the expert noted. However, as Vahe Davtyan emphasized, elections are coming up, and the authorities need to ensure positive public sentiment towards Azerbaijan, which strives for "peace" and, therefore, supplies gasoline to Armenia at a lower price than Russia. "Everything is predictable and very clear," the expert noted. As a reminder, in accordance with the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, oil product exports from Azerbaijan to Armenia have begun. Specifically, the first shipment included 22 railcars of AI-95 gasoline produced by SOCAR, weighing a total of 1,300 tons.
This agreement was reached at a meeting on November 28 in Gabala between Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev and Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan. The export of Azerbaijani oil products to Armenia is purely commercial in nature, and the gasoline will be sold at prices in line with international market prices.
