ArmInfo. Armenia desires to become a full member of the European Union and will remain in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) until compatibility issues arise. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this on January 14 on the sidelines of the 15th Security Forum "Armenia and the World at the Crossroads of Risks and Opportunities."
Pashinyan recalled that last year, parliament passed a law launching the EU accession process. Therefore, Yerevan's current strategy is to move with clear steps toward compliance with EU standards. Once this happens, a political decision will be made, Pashinyan added.
"Armenia may or may not be accepted into the EU. But in both cases, the country benefits. In the first case, we will become a full member of the EU; in the second, we will become a country that meets advanced modern standards," he noted. At the same time, he emphasized, Yerevan understands that the country cannot simultaneously be a member of the EU and the EAEU. However, the current situation is such that compatibility is not yet an issue - Armenia can be a member of the EAEU and apply for EU membership in the future.
"Therefore, as long as compatibility is possible, Armenia will remain in the EAEU. As soon as incompatibility arises, we, together with the citizens of Armenia, will make a decision based on the free will of the people of Armenia," Nikol Pashinyan stated.
Earlier, Moscow, through Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, stated that it views Yerevan's decision to launch the process of joining the European Union (EU) as the beginning of Armenia's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). In December 2025, Overchuk noted that Armenia must at some point make a final decision between the EAEU and the EU.
