Central Asian countries face task of modernizing all economic sectors  - Erlan Nysanbayev

ArmInfo. "The countries of Central Asia, as a region emerging from the USSR, inherited a difficult legacy - outdated technologies," said Erlan Nysanbayev,  Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, during a  meeting with international journalists who arrived in Astana to cover  the Regional Environmental Summit (RES).

In this regard, he emphasized that these countries face the task of  modernizing all economic sectors. "We all understand that we need to  minimize pollutant emissions. We understand that we need to improve  the energy sector. Why? Because up to 80% of CO2 emissions today come  from the energy sector." "Therefore, our top priority is to reduce  these emissions in order to stabilize the overall environmental  situation," Nysanbayev noted.

According to him, production facilities are currently being  modernized in Kazakhstan, but significant resources are needed to  support these processes. In this vein, the head of the environmental  agency noted that the main goal of the RES summit is to attract the  attention of international financial institutions and the global  community. "In fact, all these problems-even those of a single  region-must be addressed collectively, by the entire world," the  minister emphasized.

He also noted that energy, agriculture, and the transition to  water-saving technologies are common challenges faced by any country.  "We need international organizations, expert opinions, and  international experience. Only through such events can we address the  challenges we face. Therefore, the main task is to modernize all  sectors of the economy and retool, which will lead to reduced  greenhouse gas emissions," he concluded.

The Regional Environmental Summit (RES) is being held in Astana from  April 22 to 24 under the theme "A Shared Vision for a Sustainable  Future." The event aims to develop comprehensive policies and tools  for the protection, restoration, and shared use of ecosystems, water,  and land resources, as well as biodiversity conservation in Central  Asian countries. The RES is organized by the Ministry of Ecology and  Natural Resources of Kazakhstan jointly with the United Nations and  several international organizations. It is the first large-scale  event aimed at developing joint solutions reflecting a regional  approach to overcoming environmental challenges.
