ArmInfo. Without a settlement of bilateral relations between Yerevan and Baku and of border issues, such infrastructure projects pose more risks and threats to Armenia than alternative opportunities. This is how Doctor of Political Sciences Vage Davtyan commented on the report that Telecom Armenia (Team Telecom Armenia) and Aztelecom signed a bilateral agreement providing for the transmission and supply of transit internet through the territories of the two countries on a commercial basis.
"As far as I understand, the purpose of the agreement concluded between Telecom Armenia and Aztelecom is to ensure internet supplies in the direction of Nakhchivan. Experts note that a backup line is also being formed for Armenia. For example, if the cable coming from Georgia is once again damaged, Armenia will have an alternative source of internet connectivity," the expert said.
He added that the question arises: why does Yerevan still tie ensuring digital and information security to a terrestrial cable connection if in 2025 it connected to the Starlink satellite system? He recalled that the latter has a number of strategic advantages compared with terrestrial cable internet. "This issue also has a geopolitical component, which, in my view, is key in this story. In fact, Baku’s access to Nakhchivan is being provided through Armenia’s territory, which largely fits into the so-called 'corridor logic.'
That logic, as we know, is not limited exclusively to ground transport communications but also includes energy, digital and other types of communication routes. Thus, without the settlement of bilateral relations and border issues, such infrastructure projects carry for Armenia more risks and threats than alternative opportunities," he summarized.
