ArmInfo. The key goal of modernization of the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is to enhance safety and to increase the electric power output, Rubik Grigoryan, representative of "Armenian NPP" CJSC, said during today's meeting with the students and lecturers of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia.
He said that the project on prolongation of the lifespan of the ANPP will increase the electric power output from the current 407 MW to 440 MW. Grigoryan added that much work is to be done in the shortest time possible. In particular, in 2018 and 2019 a number of devices will be replaced. "This is a very hard work and it needs coordination of all parties' efforts," he said. To ensure the safety of the power unit, it is envisaged to replace the hydrogen-cooled generators with an air cooling system to prevent fire and explosions.
When replying to ArmInfo's question about the condition of the reactor vessel, Grogoryan said that the examination of the vessel will be completed in 2016. Nevertheless, according to preliminary data, the vessel is in a good condition. But it is necessary to conduct instrumental examination. Grigoryan recalled that once every four years the reactor vessel undergoes in-service inspection by non-destructive methods. "No deviations have been registered so far," he stressed.
