ArmInfo. Vahe Hakobyan, the region's governor, personally participated in the first experimental landing at the regional airport of Kapan city, Syunik region of Armenia. The flight and landing were carried out on a light sport airplane.
The Kapan city airport in the south east of Armenia was not exploited during last decades. Meanwhile, the source in DGCA (Deneral department of Civil Aviation), in an unofficial talk with ArmInfo said that the investment program of this regional is not yet implemented, the airport is not yet certificated.
Vahe Hakobyan, the region's governor who personally attended the flight, in a discussion with journalists said that the pilot is a specialist from Russia, who was to estimate the condition of the runway, conditions for take-off and landing. He also said that the investment program will cost $2 million USD. "Despite the fact that the airfield did not work more than 25 years, our flight was successful," the governor said. He informed that construction works are currently underway, there is a project of the main airport building. The work will be carried out in accordance with all the necessary standards. The governor noted that the need to operate the airport is conditioned by the desire to resume the air communication of the region with the country's capital and other regions. Answering a question about whether it is possible to carry out flights from the Kapan airport to the NKR capital Stepanakert, the governor theoretically did not rule out this: "In any case, nothing hinders this". Speaking about the availability of flights for the population, the governor assured that all the calculations have already been made, the tickets will be so affordable that regular passenger traffic will be guaranteed.
