ArmInfo. Today, with the participation of the Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan and the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Seyed Kazem Sadjadi, the free economic zone of Meghri was opened.
As Minister of Economic Development and Investments Suren Karayan noted at the opening ceremony, construction work in the zone is planned to be carried out in two stages. At the first stage, he said, minimal necessary conditions for its work have been created, but in the second stage it is planned to expand the territory by 70 hectares and create all necessary conditions for profitable activity. The minister said that it is planned to attract 50-70 companies in the coming years that will invest $ 100-130 million. As a result, 1,500 jobs will be created, and the level of exports of goods and services will reach $ 250 million. He also said that there are already companies that have expressed a desire to work in a free economic zone, including European, Russian and Iranian, and in the next few days five agreements will be signed.
Karayan noted that an agreement on cooperation between the free economic zones of "Meghri" and "Aras" (IRI) has already been signed, which will help increase trade between the countries.
Companies operating in the free economic zone "Meghri" will be exempt from income tax, value added tax and excise tax and customs duties. They will only pay income tax. In the free economic zone will be represented by agricultural, processing, trade, transport, and travel companies.
