ArmInfo. The delegation of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Food Code), led by coordinator for the European region, Nailia Karsibekova, arrived in Armenia for a two-day visit.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture, the department held a round- table discussion on the role of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in ensuring food security. Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Armenia Artak Kamalyan noted that the discussions will help to more effectively address issues in the field of food security. "We spend a lot of time and make significant efforts to solve problems in the field of food security, and fortunately Codex Alimentarius brings significant benefits in this struggle. Taking into account scientific and technological progress, in particular in agrochemistry, food safety issues in the future will become more relevant than today, "the deputy minister said, stressing the role and importance of the Code in this context.
According to the report, Nailia Karsibekova presented the main objectives of the mission, the problems, the history of the creation of the Code, the structure, the main activities. Some members of the delegation presented the key documents of the Code, development strategy, role in the export of agricultural products and answered questions from the participants.
The Armenian side made a report on food security policy in the country and presented a number of issues related to supervision in this area.
To note, the Alimentarius Commission is a structure established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and WHO (United Nations World Health Organization). The Commission is an intergovernmental body whose members are 188 countries and one organization (EU). Armenia joined the Commission in December 1994. The Codex Alimentarius (Food Code) is a set of international food standards adopted by the FAO and WHO International Commission on the implementation of the Code of Food Standards and Regulations. Codex standards cover basic foodstuffs, both processed and semi- processed and unprocessed.
