ArmInfo.Armenia ranked 64th in the ranking of the most innovative countries (Global Innovation Index 2019) prepared by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Over the year, Armenia improved its position by 4 points. In the Global Innovation Index 2018, the country ranked 68th.
<The sequence number in the general list does not fully reflect the situation. If we take into account per capita incomes, the indicators of Armenia, Georgia and Moldova have exceeded the expectations of experts, "they note in WIPO.
If we talk about the geographical neighbors of Armenia, in the world ranking of innovations Russia took the 46th place, Georgia - the 48th, Azerbaijan - the 84th, and Turkey - the 41st.
The index is headed by Switzerland. The top ten also includes Sweden, the USA, the Netherlands, the UK, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel.
In terms of the quality of innovation, China is at the top of the list (14th place in the list). Among the high- income countries, the United States ranks first in terms of the quality of innovation. Switzerland, which is the leader of the main ranking, is in fourth place.
It is noteworthy that this year the WIPO report focuses on innovation in medicine. The authors note that any discoveries in this area, before they can be used by broad sections of the population, pass through many instances. Sometimes this process stretches over decades.
The Global Innovation Index has been published since 2007. It is made up of employees of Cornell University USA, located in France, the European Institute of Business Management INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (a specialized UN agency).
Compilers evaluate the innovative potential of countries and their success in innovation. Estimates are based on data from various sources, including World Bank data. Among other things, indicators on the number of registered patents and expenditures on education, the number of patent applications, as well as expenditures on the development and introduction of innovations are taken into account.
