ArmInfo. Armenia plans to construct a new nuclear power plant before the current one expires in 2036. The new plant, based on preliminary estimates, is expected to have a capacity of 400-600 MW. Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, stated this on September 19 at the Global Armenian Summit in Yerevan.
According to Sanosyan, the energy sector of Armenia has a rather interesting structure. Approximately 40% of the country's electricity is produced by NPPs, about 30% by TPPs, about 20% by HPPs, and the remaining 10% is generated by solar power plants. , the minister said.
At the same time, the head of MTAI pointed out, that the topic of the country's energy dependence is frequently discussed. However, it is impossible not to depend on any resource. emphasized Gnel Sanosyan.
In his opinion, it is necessary to work towards extending the service life of the existing NPP until 2036, which is currently in progress. Additionally, by 2036, there should be a new nuclear power plant. , the minister explained. In addition, the head of MTAI indicated that the government continues to encourage the installation of new solar power plants. There are also interesting projects related to wind power plant technology, that are currently in progress. , said Gnel Sanosyan.
