ArmInfo. In the upcoming year and a half, as we approach the Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia must demonstrate its leadership in biodiversity conservation across all sectors of the economy at various venues and forums, as stated by the UN Permanent Representative to Armenia, Francoise Jacob, during the HIF Yerevan 2025 Hospitality Investment Forum, emphasizing the importance of the hospitality sector in supporting this.
Speaking about Armenian tourism in relation to biodiversity, she likened it to a tree that has yet to blossom. She mentioned that Armenia is one of 30 key biodiversity hotspots, with unique ecosystems for a country of its size. "This is an exceptional phenomenon. How many people know about this? Not that many," the UN Permanent Representative noted.
She spoke about the opportunities that will open up for Armenia with the hosting of COP17. According to Jacob, exhibitions can be held within the framework of the Conference, where best practices in biodiversity conservation, among other topics, can be presented.
For long-term transformation, in her opinion, it is also necessary to pay attention to the development of ecotourism throughout the country. "COP17 will be a great opportunity for all of us, and we must start now. Armenia can showcase best practices, prove itself as a regional leader in tourism and biodiversity, demonstrate inclusive ecotourism, a successful PPP (public-private partnership) format, and attract numerous new investments. On behalf of the UN, I want to add that an important condition for all this is peace. This country genuinely strives for peace, and we see what is happening in the neighborhood, we see its impact on tourism. I believe as a community of economic leaders, we should advocate for peace. Tourism flourishes in an environment of peace and stability. Armenia is currently emerging as one of the few stable place in the world, and we must recognize and value that, " Jacob concluded.
