Ignoring the Stockholm Arbitration decision will harm the investment  climate and foreign policy positions of Armenia - political scientist

ArmInfo.  Ignoring the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration will not only result in financial losses, but  also have a long-term  negative impact on the investment climate and foreign policy positions of the country. Political scientist Suren Surenyants shared this opinion on his Facebook page in response to the Armenian government's reaction to the demand of the  Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) on  July 22, 2025, which requires the cessation  of the implementation of  new laws targeting Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC and any  confiscation actions.

"The arrogant revolutionary Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan  believes that his desires are above the law. Such authoritarian  thinking may be "digested" within the country, but it will inevitably  face resistance from international institutions," the political  scientist stated.

As Surenyants pointed out, the Armenian government uses  "state  security" and national legislation to justify its failure to  implement the arbitration decision. However, he emphasized that this  is not sufficient from an international law perspective. In this  regard, the political scientist warned about the consequences of not  implementing the decision, noting that it could result in hundreds of  millions of dollars in damages, the freezing of the country's state  assets abroad, and significant harm to the investment environment.  "The Stockholm Arbitration decision demonstrates that the price of  violating international treaties or neglecting them can be extremely  high. The best option for Armenia is to find a solution through  negotiations," Surenyants concluded.
