ArmInfo. Armenia needs a large-capacity nuclear power plant. Political scientist Vahe Davtyan shares this view.
According to him, in an interview with 5 TV, Yerevan has now officially stated its position on the future of Armenia's nuclear energy sector, declaring the priority of constructing nuclear power plants with small modular reactors. While Armenia is exploring the capabilities of five countries, it is clear to everyone that the primary candidates are the United States and Russia. Interestingly, the United States has not yet submitted any proposals, unlike Russia, which has presented Yerevan with projects for a large-capacity 1200 MW nuclear power plant and the Ritm-200N small modular nuclear power plant. According to the political scientist, Armenia needs a 600 MW unit. "Unlike the American small modular nuclear power plant, the Russian proposal has already been partially tested and has excellent seismic resistance. In this case, we are talking about reactors similar to the Ritm-200 type, which Russia uses on icebreakers," the expert noted.
